An article in The Sunday Age has criticised the socioeconomic status (SES) funding model for providing funding for Independent schools. The article argued that the aim of the SES model had been to assist to keep non-government school fees from rising, but criticised schools for increasing their fees by more than indexation since the SES model was introduced in 2001. In contrast to the articles critical of government funding for non-government schools, the Productivity Commission’s annual Report on Government Services (ROGS) 2011 has indicated that total government funding per capita for non-government schools has decreased in real terms over recent years, while funding for government school students has increased. Review Submissions Call for Changes to School Funding

Submissions from various Independent school organisations to the Australian Government’s Review of Funding for Schooling have called for government funding to be linked to students, rather than the sector in which the students are educated. Independent Schools Victoria suggested that a ‘portable funding allowance’ could be introduced, which parents could use at whichever school they decided was the best for their child. Pyne Outlines Coalition’s Education Policies

In an address to the National Press Club, the Shadow Minister for Education, Mr Christopher Pyne, outlined that, if elected, the Coalition would introduce policies including the provision of greater autonomy to government school principals, remove school financial information from the MySchool website and retain the funding maintenance provisions of the Socioeconomic Status (SES) funding model for non-government schools.
