Education blueprint reform

The Herald Sun, 2 September 2008

As part of the Victorian Government’s Blueprint Education Reform for the next five years, parents are being urged to ‘become more involved in their children’s education’ in a bid lift Victorian school standards.

New research obtained by the Victorian Government claims that students perform better at school if their parents ‘take a heavy interest’ in their education. The state government believes that parents have the ability to improve their children’s marks, attendance rates and job outcomes.

The Victorian Minister for Education, Ms Bronwyn Pike, said that ‘we know that when parents and schools work together children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more. There is overwhelming evidence to show that there is a strong link between effective parental engagement and improved educational outcomes.’

According to the Victorian Premier, Mr John Brumby, the Victorian Government would like to see parents and schools working together in closer partnerships to assist all schoolchildren’s learning, development and wellbeing by providing parents with better support.

Mr Brumby stated that the government was ‘committed to giving children the best possible start in life, improving the transition from early childhood services to school and giving parents more information about the progress of their children’.
