the national curriculum board announces appointment of educatiors The Australian, 10 September 2008 The National Curriculum Board (NCB) has released the names of the people who have been selected to draft the ‘framing documents’ for the new national curriculum. Professor Peter Freebody from the University of Sydney has been named as the NCB’s adviser on the English curriculum, Professor Peter Sullivan from Monash University will draft the mathematics curriculum, Professor Denis Goodrum from the University of Canberra will advise on the science curriculum and Professor Stuart Macintyre from the University of Melbourne will frame the history curriculum. Professor Goodrum indicated that the challenge in drafting a national curriculum would be to reduce the amount of material covered. He stated that ‘there's a tendency to succumb to breadth rather than depth of learning and that's one challenge to try to meet’. Professor Sullivan argued that the challenge would be to design a curriculum that met the needs of future students. The framing documents are designed to outline the broad directions for the curriculum in English, mathematics, science and Australian history. The Chairman of the NCB, Professor Barry McGaw, indicated that the framing documents would serve as a starting point for public consultation and that the NCB would retain the final decision on the nature of the national curriculum.
