Aisv's performance pay project

Seven Victorian independent schools will take part in a pilot programme to measure teacher performance.

They are trialing a performance-based pay model developed by the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV) that will assess teachers using four measures.

The Chief Executive of AISV, Ms Michelle Green, believes that ‘to build a sound system of performance-based pay, we need to have a much better understanding of what makes an effective teacher.’

‘Measuring teacher performance and finding out how good teachers produce the best educational outcomes for students will provide us with information that can then be used to improve skills across the profession,’ Ms Green said.

Ms Green said that understanding what good teachers know and do in the classroom would contribute to raising education standards.

The four measures that are being used in the pilot are:

  • Performance judged against professional teaching standards set by professional associations and registration bodies.
  • Participation in professional learning activities that focus on evidence-based improvements in classroom practice.
  • Contribution to the learning community by, for example, working with or leading a team, contributing to the culture of the school and the broader education community through research, publications and presentation.
  • Evaluation showing that improved teaching has resulted in better educational outcomes for students.

Ms Green said that AISV’s aim was to build the capacity of teachers and help teachers put their new knowledge into the classroom. This would attract, motivate and help retain quality teachers.
