High-Speed Internet for Victoria’s Rural Independent Schools The Association of Independent Schools of Victoria, 20 August 2008 Independent schools in rural Victoria will have access to high-speed broadband internet communications through a network established by the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV). The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, launched Project VICTOR in Melbourne today. VICTOR stands for Victorian Independent Collaborative Technologies and Online Resources. AISV Chief Executive, Ms Michelle Green, said today AISV will install and manage the network to allow teachers and students to communicate from town to town, across the state and around the world. ‘Our schools in rural Victoria do not have the same access to high-speed broadband at an economical price as do government schools, so we decided to set up our own network,’ Ms Green said. VICTOR will deliver professional development opportunities and curriculum support materials to 92 regional independent schools in Victoria and 35 Melbourne metropolitan schools in the first 12 months. When completed, all Melbourne independent schools will be able to access services through the network. Ms Green said benefits for students, teachers and schools include:
The project is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks program. AISV was successful in a competitive application for funding, and about half the cost of VICTOR is being met by the government through the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and the other half by AISV and Member Schools. Ms Green welcomed the federal government’s part funding and support from the Victorian Government, which will make it possible for AISV to buy Telstra services through a government contract.
