Funding Announced for the Primary Schools for the 21st Century Program

AISV, 5 May 2009

The Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV) welcomes Australian Government funding announced today in the Primary Schools for the 21st Century component of the Building the Education Revolution program.

AISV Chief Executive, Michelle Green said it was important that teachers and students in all Victorian schools – government and non-government – are provided with modern teaching and learning facilities.

‘Today’s funding announcement is in line with government guidelines and recognises that independent schools receive only a fraction of the capital funding that governments invest in public schools. The funding roughly matches percentages of enrolments in each sector – government, Catholic and independent,’ Ms Green said.

‘It will be welcomed by parents with children at independent schools who make substantial personal financial contributions to the capital development and running costs of their schools, saving taxpayer dollars.’

Ms Green said independent schools will use the funding for major infrastructure projects, including libraries, multipurpose halls and classrooms. These projects will support local jobs, stimulate the economy and provide long term infrastructure.
