Independent Schools Foster Partnerships AISV, 19 May 2009 Independent schools foster a spirit of partnership between the family, school, the child and the community. This is the view of Mrs Elizabeth Jedynak, Chairman of the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV). Mrs Jedynak was speaking at AISV’s annual general meeting at Camberwell Grammar School on 19 May. ‘Our schools are fortunate because they can respond quickly to the issues of the day, whether they are local, state-wide, national or international,’ Ms Jedynak said. This was demonstrated when Member Schools raised more than $287,000 for relief efforts following the devastating February bushfires. The goods and services offered by AISV Member Schools were 'truly inspiring'. Mrs Jedynak encouraged all schools to contribute their stories and pictures about their links with the community on the AISV website’s Making Active Connections page at www.ais.vic.edu.au. ‘This is our opportunity to demonstrate that we are helping young people to understand how they can contribute to a civil society.’ Mrs Jedynak noted that the number of students in independent schools in Victoria rose by two per cent in the twelve months to February 2009 to total more than 120,000 students and that over the last five years there had been a 13 per cent increase. She said this reflected the quality education offered by the 220 independent schools that belong to AISV. It also reflected the fact that parents want choice, they want to influence more directly the education of their children, and they were prepared to fund it.
