Hard Lessons Sunday Herald Sun, 12 April 2009 My husband and I had intended educating our three children in the state system ('Schools lose out on cash', SHS, and 'Wealthy schools hit jackpot', SHS website, both April 5). But we found the system lacking on so many levels that we pulled our eldest out at year 5 and put him in private education. We put our youngest in an independent school from the outset. Our middle child remains in the state system purely because of family finances. The problems we find with state schools revolve around children not learning the fundamentals of maths, spelling and science. We have had to assist our children with private lessons. Since going to a private school our eldest's education has improved and he is more confident. Private schools deserve funding. One of many reasons being not all children at private schools come from wealthy families. Michele, Caulfield South
