Victorian Government Announces A New Higher Education Plan

Media Release, The Hon Jacinta Allan MLA, 2 April 2009; The Age, 2 April 2009

The Victorian Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation, Ms Jacinta Allan, has announced that the Victorian Government will offer a universal entitlement for all Victorians to access post-school education, including Vocational Education and Training, Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes and universities.

Under the Higher Education Plan, within three years every Victorian student who leaves school will be funded to enter the post-school course of their choice, provided that there is sufficient demand for the course and that the student has met the minimum course requirements.

Ms Allan indicated that an expert panel would be established to examine how participation in post-school education can be increased, to improve transition between schools, TAFEs and universities, to improve access to regional and outer suburban institutions and to ensure that there are enough graduates in those industries and occupations critical to the economy.

Ms Allan also indicated that, in order to meet the Australian Government’s requirement for 40 per cent of people aged between 25 and 34 years to have attained a bachelor degree by 2025, at least 67,000 additional tertiary places would need to be created in Victoria over the next ten years.
