Students Seek Schooling that Leads to Jobs The Australian, 25 March 2009 Fifteen Australian universities have reported that in the last year, higher education enrolments have increased by 6.5 per cent across all disciplines. ‘Vocational disciplines that lead directly to careers’ have experienced the highest increase in enrolments, including business, engineering, law, science and teaching. University Deans from across the country have reported that the high enrolments in key vocational disciplines are a ‘welcome response’ to recent skills shortages around the nation. In an interview with The Australian, Mr Glenn Withers, Chief Executive of Universities Australia, stated that ‘in difficult times, school-leavers will seek the security of university degrees. We know the income and employment opportunities are strong for graduates’. In Victoria, 52,942 university offers were extended after a six per cent increase in undergraduate university applications.
