Pilot Cybersafety Project to be Introduced in Australian Schools

The Australian Government Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Ms Julia Gillard, has launched a national pilot project to address cyberbullying and cybersafety in schools.

The Australian Government has allocated $3 million to support 164 pilot schools to implement policies and practices that support the smart, safe and responsible use of technology.

The project will be conducted by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and aims to:

• make cybersafety an integral part of student wellbeing practices in schools
• improve the curriculum in relation to cyber-safety
• increase the skill and confidence of teachers to confront cybersafety issues
• help schools work with parents and the community to keep children safe.

The pilot project will finish in April 2010 and an evaluation of its outcomes will inform the review of the National Safe Schools Framework, which is scheduled to be completed in June 2010.
