Following the roll out of the Australian Government’s controversial My School website, the Australian Government Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Ms Julia Gillard, has outlined plans to expand the government’s transparency and accountability agenda with the development of an equivalent site for Australian universities.

In outlining plans for the ‘My University’ site, Ms Gillard suggested that the publication of information about the courses, campus facilities and teaching standards of all tertiary institutions would be made available online by 2012.

The Australian Government, along with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, will work with the higher education sector to determine what details will be available on the website. It is believed that learning and teaching performance indicators, information on student progression and employment outcomes will be available on the ‘My University’ site.

‘Informed student choice is particularly important in the new student-centred system because student choice will impact so much on institutional behaviour,'' Ms Gillard will tell the conference. Information will be provided in an easily accessible form for students and parents, universities will be able to learn from the success of their colleagues, and the learning outcomes and the quality of teaching of our universities will become better known in the general community,’ Ms Gillard said.

Universities and Vice-Chancellors around the country have welcomed the opportunity. The Professor of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne, Professor Simon Marginson, said that students ‘too often relied on hearsay and rumour when choosing’ universities’.
