Federal Government Continues to Support Funding for Non-Government Schools

The Federal Government announced earlier this month that it would maintain the existing socioeconomic status (SES) model for funding non-government schools until 2012.

The SES funding model is a way of measuring the ability of a non-government school community to support its school.
The SES works by measuring the socioeconomic status of the parents whose children are enrolled at a school.

The Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Ms Julia Gillard, said that the Rudd Government will ‘honour’ its election promise and keep the current funding model for the next four years. ‘We believe that schools need certainty and we’ve provided that certainty by giving a commitment to the SES index for the forthcoming funding agreement,’ she said.

Ms Gillard did not comment on any possible changes to the existing SES funding model beyond 2012.
