Schools to share resources

The Sunday Telegraph, Glenn Milne, 20 January 2008; The Sunday Times; Steve Connolly, 20

As part of the Federal Government’s bid to provide all students in years 9 to 12 with access to computers and
broadband internet connections, ‘resource-rich’ non-government schools will be urged to share their resources with
other non-government and government schools in their area.

The Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Ms Julia Gillard, has said that the Rudd Government
will conduct a ‘nation-wide’ audit of all schools to determine ‘where resources could be shared’.

‘We’re working with the states for public schools and we’re working with the Catholic and independent schools sector’,
Ms Gillard said, adding that all three education sectors would receive an ‘equitable’ portion of the National secondary School Computer Fund.

In addition, $62.5 million will be allocated to the Local Schools Working Together programme. The programme’s aim is
to encourage non-government and government schools to build shared facilities.

‘It may be that the schools want a music hall for specialist teaching of music, with rehearsal rooms and a performance space. Now they wouldn’t be able to finance the development themselves, but they would be able to do it together and share it,’ Ms Gillard believes.
