Electronic speed signs for schools

Media Release, The Hon John Brumby MLA, 8 November 2007

The Victorian Premier John Brumby has announced that the Victorian Government will allocate $13.6 million to install electronic speed signs near 200 schools across Victoria.

‘Since the introduction of school speed zones in 2003, there has been a 23 percent reduction in casualty crashes and
a 24 percent reduction in crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists, outside schools,’ Premier Brumby said.

Given the success of the programme, Premier Brumby stated that an additional 603 electronic signs would be installed near schools. The speed signs would switch on during school hours to show drivers when to comply with school speed limits.

‘Better signs mean better warning for motorists and I urge Victorian motorists to observe speed limit signs outside schools. Children are one of the most vulnerable users of our road system and all drivers should be cautious and
vigilant as they travel through school areas,’ Premier Brumby said.

The Victorian Minister for Roads and Ports, Mr Tim Pallas, stated that priority would be given to schools located on
roads with a 70 km/h speed limit and to schools located on 60km/h roads with high volumes of traffic. In both cases,
‘the speed limit is lowered to 40km/h during the start and finish of school hours’.
