VCE starts a year early

The Age, Bridie Smith, 24 September 2007

According to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), a growing number of year 10 students are enrolling in VCE subjects. A spokesperson from the VCAA has said that 25,231 year 10 students are doing a VCE
subject this year, which is almost 7000 more than ten years ago.

The most popular VCE subjects taken by year 10 students this year were general mathematics, business management, industry and enterprise studies, biology and psychology.

Damian Blake, a Deakin University education researcher, has said that the tendency to start VCE early was growing as both students and schools looked for an added advantage.

Dr Blake believes that more year 10 students are signing up for VCE subjects not because they are advanced students, but because an extra VCE subject increases their chances of getting a higher tertiary entrance rank. Dr Blake says that
if a student is ‘looking for an ENTER of 95…doing an extra subject will give a student an edge. It’s a reflection of how competitive it’s getting.’
