Communities Urged to set-up Schools

The Australian, Matthew Franklin, 3 August 2007

The Howard Government has advised communities facing school closures and downgrades to consider forming
community schools, which will be eligible for direct federal funding.

Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, Julie Bishop says school funding should predominately be
a state responsibility, and that state governments should not forget that they are accountable to the funding of
schools.

Ms Bishop also urges communities to establish community-based schools when schools are shutdown by state governments.

‘Many communities around Australia have established community schools and receive direct support from the commonwealth,’ she said. ‘And that would be an avenue for any community facing the loss or downgrading of a
state government school.’

Ms Bishop said that through programmes, such as the Investing in our Schools and National Chaplaincy programmes,
the commonwealth provides direct funding to all government and non-government schools.
