Proposed New History Curriculum for all Australian Schools

The Daily Telegraph, 14 July 2007

In a recent speech, Federal Opposition Leader, Mr Rudd outlined a proposal to introduce a new history curriculum
in Australian schools if the ALP wins the next Federal election.

This scheme is an expansion on the suggestions made during last year’s history summit, whose purpose was to
review the teaching of history in years 9 and 10.

The ALP plans to focus on some of Australia’s key battles through history. The study of Gallipoli, the battle of the
Coral Sea and Kokoda will become central to the newly proposed national guidelines.

In addition to implementing key study areas, the ALP will develop an award system to support all history teachers,
as well as encourage war veterans to share their war experiences with students.
