Rural Students’ Higher Education Opportunities Depleting

Media Release, The Honourable Jacinta Allan MLA, 18 July 2007

The Honourable Jacinta Allan, Victorian Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation, expressed concerns that Government funding for rural universities is inadequate. Minister Allan believes that the lack of income support for students and the increasing cost of university studies are a disadvantage to young people in rural, isolated and low socioeconomic areas.

Minister Allan used a recent government survey to emphasize the fact that only 33.9 percent of rural students
completing year 12 in 2006 enrolled in a higher education programme.

The Parliament’s Education and Training Committee will report its findings to Parliament by no later than 30 June 2009.
