Schools go Green

Speech to the Melbourne Press Club, The Hon John Howard MP, 17 July 2007; Media Release, The
Hon John Howard MP, 17 July 2007; The Age, Australian Associated Press Pty Limited, 17 July 2007

Prime Minister John Howard has announced that the Australian Government will provide schools with $336.1 million
over four years for ‘green vouchers’ to enable schools to improve energy and water efficiency.

All government and non-government schools will be eligible to receive a voucher of up to $50,000 to install solar hot
water systems and one rainwater collection tank with a capacity of more than 10,000 litres. The vouchers will also
cover associated infrastructure and fittings such as pumps and reticulation systems.

The 1600 schools that have already received funding for establishing a tank or solar heating will still be eligible to
receive a green voucher, but the value of previous grants will be deducted.

John Howard hopes the initiative will provide students and school communities with the knowledge that they can help
to preserve the environment at a local level.
